The quiet joy of one-thumb games

March 24, 2026 · Marek Kowalczyk

There's a whole category of games designed to be played with a single thumb while your other hand holds a coffee, a rail, or a sandwich. They rarely get the spotlight, but they're some of the smartest designs on mobile.

The trick is depth from simplicity. Big Bass Boat is a good example — one input, and yet mastering it takes real practice. Constraints force designers to make that single action feel amazing.

When I test these, I look for one thing: does the core move ever get boring? If tapping or holding still feels good after an hour, the design is working. If I'm fighting the screen, it isn't.

They're also just practical. Phones are things we use on the move, and a game that respects that — one you can start and stop mid-run without penalty — earns a spot on my home screen fast.
